I've never heard "When I was single" performed and happened on this nice little ditty in Soodlum's
100 Irish Ballads Volume 1. It's of a young maid bewailing her married state with a wastrel who also treats her pretty shabbily. But, typical woman, despite his ill-treatment of her, when he borrows some money from her to buy her a ring and then squanders it on a spree with the jeweller for example, she still sings in each chorus
"Ah! but still I love, I'll forgive him, I'll go with him wherever he goes."
