Although I've always known Pick a bale of cotton from the Lonnie Donegan days, it wasn't until coming to Germany that I finally learned it, sometime in 1989 whilst in the "Klingende Runde für jung und alt". Bernd Gerken worked out a quite complicated version for three ladies (Bärbel Urhahn, Magda Hielscher, Renate Buth), vocals, himself on vocals and guitar and finally yours truly on vocals and penny whistle. We had a lot of fun trying to make it work but we never really managed it to Bernd's satisfaction. We did however sing it with the Idle Fellows.
