The New Chum
Last updated: 11.10.23
The New Chum can be found in The Bushwackers Australian Song Book and is one of my Australian favourites. It is all about a "New Chum", either a recent British immigrant or a novice shearer (take your pick) being seen off in the city by Australian townsfolk.
The last verse contains good advice in proposing that the bushman with money to spend should spend it in the nearest bush tavern and thereby saving himself the trouble of a long walk.
It's a lively song with a spirited tune, in short, a joy to sing.
