"Beautiful Dreamer" is one of a number of songs that I learned whilst trying to learn to play the piano and can be found in the
Regina Song Album No. 17.We sang this
Stephen Collins Foster composition quite a lot in the Royal Navy as a very short ditty which went:
"Beautiful dreamer, lash up and stow,
'Cooks to the galley' went ages ago".
This was either used by the POOD (Petty Officer-Of-the-Day) or a messmate to chivvy out a laggard from the comfort of his pit (bunk for the younger generation, hammock for the more venerable if not ancient!). I well remember a certain Greenie, REM "Robbie" Robinson, eternally singing this song in 18A mess, HMS Victorious, in fact I believe it was the only song that he could sing!
The song can also be found in
Community Book of Fireside Songs.
