Length: approx. 3 mins. Sounds best if the 2nd tenor is doubled.
Whoa You Heiffer was clearly intended to be a fun piece as depicted by the chaotic scene of a rampant heiffer (sic( on the cover of the original sheet music. It was subtitled both as a
Cowboy Intermezzo and
A Warm Rag. It is widely considered one of the best of all the New Orleans rags and was recorded both on disc and piano roll in the year of its composition and is still recorded even today. Its form is AABBCA with a 4-bar introduction which doubles as an interlude between the C and final A strains. The A and B strains are of 16 bars whilst the C strain has, whether by design or accident, an unusual 31 bars. The final bars of the B-strain are scored with the 3-word "lyrics" of, guess what, "
Whoa You Heiffer". The 1st tenor has all the jolly melodies in this transcription for recorder ensemble and has ample opportunity to display his/her virtuosity. There is much to be enjoyed here!
