Lasses, judging from the cover of the original sheet music appears to celebrate both that sticky concoction, molasses, but also those charming Negro misses. It is charming composition with many nice touches. Its form is AABBACCDD with a 4-bar interlude preceding the CC-strains whereby the AB- and CD-strains are written the major keys of Ab and Bb respectively. The melodies fairly tinkle along and are fully syncopated throughout. Being an all bass/tenor affair, the basses have to take care in not overdoing the "umpahs" in this adaptation for recorder quintet. Great stuff!!
Lasses was published by The Groene Music Publisher's, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
A tempo of 150 crotchets/min. is suggested.
