Quoting briefly from notes in a Flanders Recorder Quartet programme, Piet Swerts, born in Tongeren, is one of Belgium's most active composers. At the gentle age of 22 he became professor of analysis, composition and piano at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven where he had studied himself. Although self-taught he attended composition courses by Witold Lutoslawski, amongst others. He has received many awards for his works, amongst them the "Gazet van Antwerpen" for his first symphony. In addition to his academic and composition activities, he is guest conductor with orchestras in Holland, France, Austria, Poland and China.
