Last updated: 02.04.23
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was, according to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, an Italian composer, also violinist and church organist; wrote serious and comic operas, among the latter and enormously successful "La Serva padrona" (imported into France, it provoked a quarrel between supporters of the French and Italian opera - the so-called "War of the Buffoons".) Died of tuberculosis. Afterwards, in order to capitalise on his popularity, many works not his were ascribed to him and still commonly are.
