Biagio Marini  (1597-1665)
Last updated: 04.09.23
According to The Oxford Companion to Music, Biagio Marini was born in Brescia and died in Venice aged sixty-eight. He was a violinist-composer and pupil of Claudio Monteverdi, who held posts in various courts of Italy and Germany. His output of vocal and chamber music is more exacting in performance than was usual in his day, and includes the earliest known sonata for solo violin (1617).
