Niccolò Jommelli  (1714-1774)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Niccolò Jommelli was an Italian composer, pupil of Leo; wrote oratorios, church music, etc.; but especially operas - apparently more than 80. Was a pioneer of the use of orchestral crescendo. Much admired in Germany, and was court music director in Stuttgart, 1753-69.
