Moritz v. Hessen-Kassel (1572-1632)

Overview

According to the Internet source given below, Moritz Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel [Moritz der Gelehrte] was a German aristocrat, composer and scholar ruling Upper Hessen and Hersfeld Abbey. Disgusted by the unfruitful dogmatic quarrels of his time he tried to establish a moderate, more Calvinistic teaching in opposition to the prevailing orthodox conservative Lutheranism. His reform efforts provoked resistance in the Lutheran movement forcing him to abdicate in 1627. He was a member of the Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft and associated with authors and poets. His court became a cultural centre through the establishment of a permanent theatre with English comedies and the promotion of music.
