Gus Elen (1862-1940)

According to the Internet source given below, Ernest Augustus Elen was an English music hall singer and comedian born in Pimlico, London. Before becoming a singer he worked variously as a barman, draper's assistant and egg packer. He began busking when young and sang in a minstrel troupe. His solo career started in 1891 by singing songs in public houses in a style similar to that of cockney fruit sellers known as costermongers. He costumed accordingly with a striped jersey coster uniform, peaked cap turned to one ear and a short clay pipe in the side of his mouth. His stage character was bad tempered and pugnacious.
During an English music hall strike he went to America performing the same act but was less successful than his friend Albert Chevalier. On returning to England he was a major attraction in music halls across London. He retired in 1914 but made occasional stage and film appearances in the 1930's.
Elen died in Balham, South London.
