According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Giovanni Bononcini [or Buononcini] was an Italian composer and cellist, one of a family of musicians; worked in Rome, Vienna, Berlin, and (1720-32) London, where he rivalled George F. Handel for a time, leaving eventually when plagiarism was proved against him. Works include operas, Masses, funeral anthem for the Duke of Marlborough. Died in poverty in Vienna.
