William Billings  (1746-1800)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, William Billings was one of the earliest American-born composers, but a tanner by trade; wrote "fuguing tunes" (with primitive imitation), words and music of hymns, music to American patriotic songs, etc. Also concert promoter.
