From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-- Johnson traces the history of Our National Symbols and describes how they evolved after the American Revolution. The flag, the Liberty Bell, the eagle, Uncle Sam, and the Statue of Liberty are among the emblems discussed. St. Pierre describes the War of 1812 and the events that precipitated the writing of "`The Star Spangled Banner".' Each verse is analyzed so that readers will appreciate the significance of the lyrics in portraying the patriotism and cohesiveness of the United States. The use of the song and its designation as Our National Anthem are recounted. Both titles are interesting and well written; they feature well-produced and informative, full-color illustrations and reproductions, and historical photographs.
