According to the Internet source given below, Cyril Tawney was an English singer-songwriter and a proponent of the traditional songs of the West of England, as well as traditional and modern maritime songs.
He was born in Gosport, Hampshire and joined the Royal Navy at the age of sixteen, serving for thirteen years, mostly in submarines. Whilst in the RN he developed his lifelong interest in English traditional music. On leaving the RN in 1959 he became a full-time professional musician and broadcaster both on radio and television.
