According to the Internet source given below, Rolf Harris was born in Western Australia, where his
parents had emigrated from Cardiff. At first Rolf
became an art teacher at a local Perth school, and at
21 was producing sketches and paintings of his
own. At 22, with his life savings of £297, he arrived
in Britain, enrolled at Art School, and paid his way
by doing cabaret work at night. When he was forced
to choose which one to concentrate on, he chose
showbiz. Rolf made his TV debut here in 1953 as a
cartoonist-storyteller. In the late 50's Rolf was
probably best known at the "Down Under Club", in
Earls Court. He played and sang there for six years
and then married Alwen Hughes, a Welsh sculptress
he had met at art school. Their daughter, Bindi was
born in March 1964.
