I had never heard or heard of "Der Wilddieb" until coming across it in Lieder, Songs und Gospels 3. This song tells the very moral story of a poacher who kills a gamekeeper on being caught in the act of shooting a deer. The poacher immediately rues this deed and gives himself up to the village policeman not before having respectfully performed the last rites on his victim.
