I was obliged to learn
When Israel was in Egypt's land at the behest of Ralf Barysch who I met in the
Pinökel and must say it was well worth the effort. It has become my favourite gospel and I love singing it. The version that I sing can be found in
Lieder, Songs und Gospels 1.
This version is has just four verses compared with the massive 25 verses given in
The Story of the Jubilee Singers. It would be terrific to sing the original version but which of today's audiences could put up with it?
There is a choral SATB arrangement of
When Israel was in Egypt's land by Siegfried Macht in
Chor Liederbuch published by
Scott Publications
