Pleasant and Delightful
Last updated: 11.04.22
I started to learn Pleasant and Delightful after having heard it regularly in the Cumberland Arms, Byker sometime in 2011 on account of its rousing chorus. It is a song which everyone can join in. The version I sing is taken from Roy Palmer's The Oxford Book of Sea Songs. Roy Palmer noted that a Mr Willie Miller sang this song at the Eel's Foot, Eastbridge, Suffolk in 1947.
Recently (October, 2013), I found another 5-verse variant under the title of The Soldier and His True Love given in Marrow Bones.
The Tyneside Maritime Chorus led by Benny Graham sing a version with slightly different lyrics and to a slightly different tune.
This song may be found in the Tyneside Maritime Chorus songbook
