"The Plains of Mexico" is a fine roaring shanty which I found in Sea Songs Ships and Shanties. Our Master Mariner noted that the hero of the shanty was Santa Anna. the last president of Mexico before the greater part of the country was grabbed by the United States. It commemorates the defeat of Santa Anna's patriots at Molino del Rey by the United States under General Taylor in 1847. The shanty ignores historical facts and turns events around whereby "Santy Anna gained the day" and "Gin'ral Taylor run away". It's a great song to sing, a real belter!
