The words to O Willie Brewed A Peck O' Maut
were penned by none less than the Scottish National poet, Robert Burns
(1759-1796) and the melody composed by Allan Masterton
. The piece was especially written to "warm" Mr William Nichol's, Willie himself, new house in Nithsdale (Srath Nid in Scottish Gaelic), on the Scottish/English border. It is a most charming piece telling of an all-night drinking session undertaken by three very good friends swearing that they were not very drunk:
We are nae fou', we're nae fou', but just a wee drop in our e'e!
The version I sing together with Dr. Rosteck
is an amalgam derived from The New Scottish Songbook
and Daily Express Community Song Book
