"Lorelei", written by Heinrich Heine in 1823, and Ännchen von Tharau were the first poems which I learned by heart in the early 1960's out of Teach Yourself More German. I'm afraid in my early years I often used this poem to show off my knowledge of things German
The version I sing can be found in Lieder, Songs und Gospels 2. The melody is by Friedrich Silcher (1838) who also wrote the melody for "Ännchen von Tharau". The song itself is fairly melancholic and is about a fair German siren on the Rhein luring a fisherman to doom.
