I Want To Have a Little Bomb
Last updated: 11.10.23
I came across I Want To Have a Little Bomb in Sydney Carter's Songs of Sydney Carter, in the Present Tense Book 2. Written in 1963 at the height of the Cold War when the French and Chinese were hell-bent on catching up with the nuclear arms race it epitomises the Zeitgeist prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. The CND movement and "Give Peace a Chance" and all that.. As one who served in the Roayl Navy on the Mighty Vic (HMS Victorious) during all 4 post-modernisation commissions, I was acutley aware of the fragility of human existence on account of the "buckets of sun" we carried.
