The Gypsy
Last updated: 22.01.22
I came across "The Gypsy" in Max Boyce's, the Welsh folk hero, Max Boyce Songbook Volume 2 in 1993. For a while I thought that this was a Welsh song until learning the better when finding it also in 100 Irish Ballads Volume 1. As neither book has any further explanation so then without further ado for the sake of putting it somewhere I've categorised this song as being English!
The song is the amusing story of a gypsy refusing the advances of a very determined young lady. It's only in the last lines that we learn that the reason for his refusal i.e. he is twenty two whilst she is only eight.
