Down in Yon Forest
Last updated: 11.10.23
Down in Yon Forest is an ancient English Christmas carol with its roots going back to the Renaissance. It came into my repertoire by the good graces of the Tyneside Maritime Chorus of which I was a proud member for 3 years between 2011 and 2014. Whereas I never heard them sing it my curiosity was roused sufficiently to track down its tune and roots.
Their version appears to be that which was arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
It has been recorded extensively by such luminaries as Joan Baez, Shirely Collins, The Albion Band, Burl Ivesand Steeleye Span. I feel honour bound to take it on myself!
This song may be found in the Tyneside Maritime Chorus songbook
