The Trifler is shown on the cover of the original sheet music to be an elegant lady in an enticing pose reclining on a plushy sofa. Whether there is any connection between this two step and the same named Broadway comedy by Murray Carson and Nora Keith brought out in the same year or the play by Edgar Lee Masters (1907) is a matter of conjecture. Publisher John Stark held The Trifler to be an inspiring two-step, a view shared by this editor. Its form is AABBACB with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude 1- and B-strains whereby the ABBA- and CB-strains are written in the major keys of Eb and Ab respectively. A great ensemble number that dare not be trifled with!
The Trifler was published by Thiebes Stierlin, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
