Length: approx. 3½ mins. Sounds best if the 1st tenor is doubled.
The subtitle "Joplin-Rag" refers to
The Smiler being a work composed in the "classical" ragtime form as postulated by Scott Joplin i.e. AABBCCDD with short 4-bar introduction and transition phrases. The rag itself is pleasant enough and its day was popular and partly made Wenrich's name. This recorder adaptation is not especially demanding and is well within the scope of recorder ensemble of medium skills.
The Smiler was published by
Arnett-Delonais Co., Chicago, Illinois, USA.
A tempo of 80 - 90 crotchets/min. is suggested.
This recorder adaptation is respectfully dedicated to Heike Gödeke, the smiling physiotherapist of Bremen-Vegesack, Germany.
