Heitor Villa-Lobos was deeply rooted in Brazilian folk music and was famous for his extensive travels of his native country in search of material - even to the extent of being on the menu for some his indigenous countrymen. This recorder adaptation is based on his four-part setting of the Brazilian folk song Auê! Senhora terra. The original lyrics were:

Auê! Senhora terra de Sao Salvadô!
Auê ! terra bendita do Senhô Sao Salvadô!
Xangô ! Salvadô! credo cruz! Capeta!
Na Bahia tem! Coco de vintem, ô iaia!
Lá na Bahia tem!
Ai! Lá na Bahia tudo há!

This lovely little work is characterised by the change of time signatures i.e. 2/2, 3/2, 2/2 and 4/4 which should be clearly differentiated, as also the change of tempo in bar 32 (from poco moderato to andante).
