Length: approx. 4 mins. Sounds best with a doubled bass or an additional tenor.
The Cabbage Rag is an enchanting affair in AABBCACABB form with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in F-major and B-major respectively. The strains are folksy one-note melodies which characterise Bertha Stanfield's rags. This transcription for recorder quartet has a minor quirk in that the 1st tenor in bar 4 is called upon to play a high F something that is normally beyond the range of that instrument. Hereby it can be substituted by a high C without detriment. Alternatively the high F could be played by the doubled bass or additional tenor if available. The upper notes of chords in the bass score can be played either by tenor or bass.
The Cabbage Rag was published by Spiker & McMillan, Joplin, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
