April Fool Rag is an interesting composition in AABACC form with an 8-bar introduction and a 12-bar interlude between the C-strains. It has several nice touches and little surprises such as in the interlude where the upper and lower registers are explores and contrasted. The editor has no idea where Jean Schwartz April Fool's joke may be hiding but with regard to this transcription for recorder which abounds in alternation for the melody voices it is the editor's whim not to reveal in advance which additional instruments are required or which voice takes the melody. It should make for a hilarious first rehearsal - a lot of fun indeed!
April Fool Rag was published by Jerome H. Remick & Co., New York & Detroit, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
