This, dare it be said, bright and breezy early Scott composition is one of the three rags written while he was still working at Dumar's Music Store. The front cover of the original sheet music is graced by a portrait of the then 17-year old composer looking sternly into a bright, even dazzling future. The rag itself is a full-blown "classic" in AABBACCDD form with a four-bar introduction and a four-bar passage between the AABBA and CCDD sections. The strains have a charming and direct simplicity which stand well up to comparison with works by Thomas Million Turpin, Charles H. Hunter or even the great Scott Joplin himself of the same period.
A Summer Breeze was published by Dumars Music Co., Carthage, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 68 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a trio version of this item.
