This early Scott composition, one of the three rags written while he was still working at Dumar's Music Store, celebrates "The Pike", the mile-long amusement area of the 1904 St Louis Exposition. It is well within the bounds of possibility that the then 18-year old composer represented his firm at the exposition along with the other ragtimers such as Scott Joplin (The Cascades (1904)), Thomas Million Turpin (St. Louis Rag (1903)), Theron Catlan Bennett (St. Louis Tickle DBE 379), Kerry Mills (Meet Me in St Louis, Louis (1904)) and others. Interestingly the official march for this prestigious event was the World's Fair March (DBE 411) composed by the little known J. Fred de Berry. The rag itself is a tuneful affair in AABBACC form with some very nice touches, the bass players will especially enjoy their counter phrases and runs setting off the happy strains of the upper voices.
