Kansas City Rag (not to be confused with Chas. L. Johnson's Doc Brown's Cakewalk (1899) - The Original Kansas City Rag), is a mark of Scott's engagement to Kansas City. He dedicated this rag to Mr. and Mrs. Mett Penn of Kansas City to which he moved in 1914. He opened his teaching premises next to the Penns and became musical director of the Panama Theatre on 12th and Vine Streets. Later on he was also the musical director at the Lincoln and Eblon theatres where he often accompanied artists on tour until his band was finally replaced by a theatre organ. The rag itself is a bright cheerful piece which fairly tootles along - ideal for recorder adaptation. Its form is AABBCBB whereby the A and B strains are in C-major with the C strain in F-major.
Kansas City Ragwas published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 96 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a quartet version of this item.
