The Westminster Chimes was dedicated to the Right Honourable Lord Grimthorpe, designer of the Westminster Clock and Bells and celebrates the said chimes. It is an interesting, and perhaps even an amusing descriptive composition which covers events between 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock in just a little under 6 minutes. It opens as one might expect with that famous same-named 8-bar tune (formerly known as the Cambridge Chimes) which is then followed by solemn passages scored Big Ben strikes 1 and Chant in Westminster Abbey. A lively polka with three variation then ensues and the whole piece is rounded-off with a Finale in the final bar of which Big Ben strikes 1. This is just the piece for those recorder ensembles that want to play something completely different.
The Westminster Chimes was published by Duncan S. Miller, London, England.
A tempo of 148 crotchets/min. is suggested.
