Length: approx. 3½ mins. Sounds best with the bass doubled.
Pastime Rag No. 2 is logically the second of Matthews Pastime Rags of which Rudi Blesh wrote in his Classic Piano Rags as being "virtuosic, wide ranging in concept and a five-chapter synopsis of the St. Louis ragtime scene. This particular rag is noted for and characterised by its long bass runs and hand clapping in the penultimate strain. Its form is AABBCCDD with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in the major keys of Bb and Eb respectively. In this transcription for recorder quintet, foot stamping a la Joplin has been substituted for hand clapping. Should the quintet be quadrumanous however, then clapping could of course be retained as was the composers wont. Clearly intended as a fun piece!
Pastime Rag No. 2 was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 74 crotchets/min. is suggested.
