In writing this composition, Lamb is said to have been inspired by James Sylvester Scott's Ragtime Oriole (1909 - DBE 117) and the idea of a bird-call rag. Not knowing what a nightingale sounded like, he took a passage from Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin's Revolutionary Etude and another from Nightingale Song by Ethelbert Nevin. Fascinating what!
Ragtime Nightingale is certainly a classic and this recorder adaptation makes heavy demands on its performers. This is a 'black" piece and all voices have plenty to do, the treble will especially enjoy the alternation to sopranino and back.
Ragtime Nightingale was published by the Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 86 crotchets/min. is suggested.
