It is obvious that the word excelsior used in the title of this rag is meant to imply "higher" or "outstanding" and not the little known technical term meaning "soft wood shavings used for stuffing"! The sporty young gentleman in an heroic posture standing on an undetermined height depicted on the cover of the original sheet music clearly shows the composer's or more likely the publisher's intention. Excelsior Rag is another Lamb gem, a classic ragtime composition in the form of AABBA (Db major) followed by CCDD (Gb major) and is extremely demanding in this recorder adaptation. Advanced ensembles will delight in its complexity and brilliant harmonies.
Excelsior Rag was published by the Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 90 crotchets/min. is suggested.
