Length: approx. 2½ mins. Sounds best with the bass doubled.
As mentioned above Johnson Rag became hit in 1950 when it was recorded by the Russ Morgan Orchestra some 33 years after its composition. It has a quasi rondo form of AABACCA and is written in the recorder layers favourite key of Ab-major. The A-strain is absolutely hypnotic and if one does not take care an involuntary repeat may result. Not an easy piece as a transcription for recorder sextet, especially the B-strain which abounds in chords of sixteenths which demand precise tonguing. Johnson Rag is well worth mastering.
Johnson Rag was published by G. Hall & H. Kleinkauf, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA, and a vocal version, lyrics by Jack Lawrence was published by Miller Music Corporation, New York.
A tempo of 90 crotchets/min. is suggested.
