Length: approx. 4½ mins. Sounds best if the 2nd tenor and bass are doubled.
Wall Street Rag is a great programmatic composition. It is actually a typical "classic" rag with four sections each with headings to whit: 1. Panic in Wall Street, Brokers feeling melancholy, 2. Good times coming, 3. Good times have come and 4. Listening to the strains of genuine negro ragtime, Brokers forget their cares. The first section is indeed melancholy with its usage of a habanera element. The final section is heavily "chorded" and it requires careful recorder playing to get the discords right. Joplin finishes this composition with a firm fine showing that repeats are not intended. In all a wonderful piece for recorder ensemble.
A tempo of 60 crotchets/min. is suggested.
Wall Street Rag was published by Seminary Music Co., New York, USA, and a piano roll made.
This recorder adaptation is respectfully dedicated to Rajesh Wilson, a great friend and banker, late of Singapore, now in Hong Kong.
