Length: approx. 3¾ mins. Sounds best if the 1st tenor is doubled.
Alagazam is a splendid cakewalk march in AABBACCBB form with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude between the B- and C-strains. This is what Holzmann himself noted in the original sheet music:
"NOTE:- The theme and title of this composition suggested itself to the writer during a trip South where he saw and met a colored regiment, who, while marking time during drill, to the strains of BLAZE-AWAY March were uttering a peculiar refrain which sounded like - Alagazam! Alagazam! Alagazam! Zam! Zam! repeating it constantly until the order was given to Forward! March!"
Alagazam was published by Leo Feist, New York, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
