The front cover of the original sheet music of Saskatoon is used by the Library and Archives Canada as an icon for its sheet music collection. Here, a daring aplomb young ski maid is shown soaring through the air against a snow-covered mountain background, her upright stance quite unlike anything seen today. As to the rag itself, it has an idiosyncratic form of ABCDEEA. Its composition may well have been thematic based on the same named river. The upwelling opening bars and the bubbling burbles throughout certainly suggest this. In reproducing these watery effects in this adaptation for recorder ensemble, exquisite tonguing is absolutely essential. A piece very rewarding to master.
