Chicken Chowder was, as mentioned above, Irene Giblin's first composition and her favourite - and no wonder when considering that this mature polished work was penned by a 17-year old teenager! It was a hit and enjoyed wide popularity by being recorded by the Ossman/Dudley string ensemble and much played by other string groups. Its form is AABBACCA with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude between the BB and A strains. The A strain is a lovely affair of ascending and descending chromatic scales that are cleverly used to simulate inversion and to meld with the B and C strains. The score is shot throughout with accentuation and staccato marks which should be carefully observed in fulfilling the composer's intention. Great stuff indeed and not for the faint-hearted!
This recorder adaptation contrasts very much with the
quintet version by Stan Davis. Here the original range scale and dynamics are retained.
