Daniels wrote The Classic using the pseudonym Neil Moret. Whilst the front cover of the original sheet music shows a classic Greek Doric temple housing a classic Greek miss, the rag itself is not of a classic form à la Scott Joplin, Joseph F. Lamb and James Sylvester Scott. Nonetheless it is a fine and interesting rag with an unusual form of AABCBDDAB with an 8-bar introduction. The ABC- and D-strains are written in the major keys of G and C respectively. It is heavily ornamented with much dotting demanding meticulous tonguing from the interpreters. Bars 41-42, which have apparently been omitted in the piano score, have been reconstructed by the editor based on iterations of the same theme in other parts of the score.
The Classic was published by Whitney-Warner Publishing Co., Detroit, Michigan, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
