Silver Spur is a straightforward march two-step in which, in this adaptation for recorder quintet, both the treble and 1st tenor voices share its stirring strains. Its form is AABBACCCC with an 8-bar bugle call introduction and a martial 12-bar interlude between the CC- and CC strains whereby the AABBA- and CCCC-strains are written in the major keys of F and Bb respectively. The cover of the original sheet music shows a youthful knight in armour leading a splendid white charger. Whether the title refers to the horse or its rider is a matter of conjecture and is irrelevant to the enjoyment of this composition.
Silver Spur was published by Sam Fox Pub. Co., Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
A tempo of 96 crotchets/min. is suggested.
