The Bell Hop Rag was, as can be seen on the cover of the original sheet music, introduced by Vera Maxwell and Andrew Braney both nattily clad as bellhops replete with pillbox headgear, high-collared mess jackets and highly polished shoes. The rag itself is actually better described as a syncopated foxtrot as its form is quite complex having some stop-time passages clearly showing that it was intended to be danced to. In fact the publisher includes this number in a foxtrot top ten along with the better known The Chevy Chase (1914) and Cruel Papa! (1914) by Eubie Blake and Will Marion Cook respectively.
The Bell Hop Rag was published by Jos. W. Stern & Co., New York, USA.
A tempo of 120 crotchets/min. is suggested.
