The cover of the original sheet music to Clover Club shows a pretty short-skirted dancer semi-reposing in a giant cocktail goblet. She supports herself using her left arm leaning on the goblet's rim whilst her right hand raised above her head holding a glass with which she proudly salutes all and sundry. A trio of three miniature winged gentlemen attired with top-hat-and-tails (replete with spats!) circle the dancer adoringly with outstretched arms. What all this has to do with Clover Club is now lost in ragtime history, perhaps some night club is celebrated - who knows? The fox trot itself is indeed a classic, as boasted in the subtitle, and a charming composition. This recorder adaptation calls on virtuosity on the part the 1st tenor voice which carries the melody except for a few bars throughout.
A tempo of 120 crotchets/min. is suggested.
Clover Club was published by Sam Fox Pub. Co., Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
There is also a quintet version of this item.
