William H. Tyers was Jamaica-born Afro-American composer of popular music. He studied music and orchestration in Germany and went on to become music director for Vernon and Irene Castle. He was also associated with James Reese Europe and Ford T. Dabney and the Clef Club, a union of Afro-American musicians. Tyers arranged for a number of New York publishers and also conducted at the Strand Roof Garden. His most influential composition is generally considered to be the tango Maori (1908) with its habanera rhythm. In ragtime circles, his Panama (1911) is also widely admired. He died in New York.
