According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Alan [John] Ridout is an English composer, also university teacher (Cambridge from 1963). Works include 5 symphonies, opera "The Pardoner's Tale" (after Chaucer), song-cycles. According to the Internet source given below, he studied under Gordon Jacob and Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music, and was awarded the Netherlands Government scholarship in 1958. He composed a wide range of choral and orchestral music, and was particularly successful in writing for children.
