According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Alan Rawsthorne was an English composer, mainly self-taught, having studied dentistry first; but also studied piano. Works, almost entirely instrumental include three symphonies, Symphonic Studies, overture "Street Corner", fantasy-overture "Cortèges"; concerto for string orchestra; two piano concertos, two violin concertos, oboe concerto, clarinet concerto, three string quartets, clarinet quartet, bagatelles and other piano solos; ballet "Madame Chrysanthème"; film music.
